More Children of Samuel Wombwell and Elizabeth Boynton

A third daughter of Samuel Wombwell and Elizabeth Boynton, born in 1794, was Mary Wombwell. She married William Gregory in London in 1814. They too must have been swept into the Wombwell orbit. When George Wombwell died, their daughter Eliza Gregory was the first beneficiary named in his will, receiving a sum of one hundred pounds. Mary died in 1880 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.

The fourth and  final daughter of Samuel Wombwell was Sarah. She married John Redhouse and appears to have stayed in the Wombwell Essex homelands.

Samuel Wombwell and Elizabeth Boynton also had four sons, of whom the most significant by far in the telling of this story is William Wombwell. William was born in Black Notley, Essex in 1790 and died in Hackney, London in 1854. He married Hannah Gibson in 1810, and the couple had nine children, as follows:

iv. James Wombwell (1819-1846)
v. William Wombwell (1824-1849)
vi. Eliza Wombwell (1828-1846)

viii. Frederick Wombwell (1832-1869)
ix. Emma Wombwell (1834-1904)

    These children are all x2 removed third cousins of Hetty Jane Owen.

Of William’s children, Mary Ann Wombwell married John Posford. The lines that ensue have been researched in detail by a Posford descendant, and can be viewed along with a substantial set of George Wombwell newspaper cuttings as well as family tree at:

Samuel Wombwell, the first son of James Wombwell and Sarah Rogers, married Elizabeth Boynton in Braintree in 1783, and there they apparently stayed until their deaths in 1841 and 1831 respectively. Eight children resulted, all x3 removed second cousins of Hetty Jane Owen. It should be noted that Samuel was considerably older than George, meaning that as George set up business in London, Samuel’s children were at a perfect age to be offered opportunities for an exciting new life and career in the wild animal industry, along also with their grandchildren as time went by. The children were:
