First Generation

1.
John Jones
(1805-????) m. Gwen Davies (1806-????)
2.
i
Griffith
Jones (1821–1879). He was born in Llanrwst. He married Catherine Davies, also
of Llanrwst and they had six children. It was Griffith who apprenticed the
young David Owen and taught him
his printing and bookbinding trade. He was still following his profession in
Llanykil in 1871.
ii
Owen
Jones (1826–????). He was born in Llanrwst. Nothing further is known.
iii
Ellis
Jones (1827–????). He was born in Llanrwst. Nothing further is known.
3.
iv
Jane Jones
(1828–1900). As we know, Jane was
born in Llanrwst and married David
Owen in Bala in 1853. They had three children, to be investigated in due
course.
v
Edward
Jones (1830-????). Nothing further is known.
vi
John
Parry Jones (1836–????). In 1871 and 1881 he was boarding with the Davies
family in Denbigh and working as a printer’s compositor.

This
late nineteenth-century chapel would seem to stand more or less where 106
High Street, Bala would have stood. Note the old walls, just to the left.
Second Generation
(First cousins x1 removed of Hetty
Jane Owen)
2.
Griffith
Jones (1821–1879) m. Catherine Davies,
i
Elizabeth
Ann Jones (1850–????) was born in Bala. In 1881, after the death of her
father, she was still living with her mother in Llanykil and working as a
milliner. Her mother is listed as a stationer’s widow, which may just conform
well enough with being a printer and bookbinder.
4.
ii
Owen
Evan Jones (1851–????). Owen was born in Bala, and was another printer’s
compositor. He eventually moved to London, where by this point he had
relatives. The 1901 census finds him living in Tottenham, still following his
trade and married to a Sarah A. Chamberlain of Stoke Newington with whom he
had six children.
5.
iii
Griffith
Jones (1853–????). He was living in Aston, Birmingham, in 1881, and married
to a Susanna from Ruthin. Griffith was working as an ironmonger and they had
a son called William. He was then living at 163 Clifton Road. His younger
brother, Peter, was living next door to him.
iv
Sarah
Catherine Jones (1859–????). Again, nothing definite.
v
Peter
Davies Jones (1861–????). He was another printer’s compositor. In 1881, he
was working in Aston, Birmingham, and living at 161 Clifton Road as a
boarder, next door to his elder brother.
vi
John
Jones (1864–????). He appears in the 1881 census, living with his mother, and
working as a grocer’s apprentice, after which there is nothing further to
report.
The
line of David Owen and Jane Jones (3) is excluded for now,
and so we move to the:
Third Generation
(second cousins of Hetty Jane Owen)
4.
Owen
Evan Jones (1851–????). m. Sarah A. Chamberlain
i
Francis
E J Jones (1880–????). Francis is not in the 1901 Tottenham census, but is
present at 24 Victoria Road, Hornsey in what looks a like a fairly carelessly
taken 1891 census report. Since Sarah Chamberlain is recorded as being
fifty-nine years old and a full nineteen years older than Owen, a slight
dilemma presents itself, since none of the recorded children could have been
hers. The 1911 census clarifies the matter. Sarah was ten years younger than
Owen Evan, and hence born in about 1861.
ii
Griffith
Jones (1882–????) was born in Stoke Newington, and was working as a London
barman in 1901.
6.
iii
Gertrude
May Jones (1888–1951) was born in Stoke Newington and died in Stroud Green,
Middlesex. She married John Stanley White (1886-1950). They had at least one
child. In 1911 she was living with her parents and was a national telephone
operator.
iv
Donald
O Jones (1890–????). He is listed in the 1891 Hornsey census, but not in the
1901 Tottenham census. There is no further information to add.
v
May
W Jones (1892–????) was born in Stoke Newington. In 1911, she was living with
her parents and working as a waitress.
vi
Owen
E Jones (1896-????) was born in Tottenham. He was a watchmaker and repairer
in 1911, when he was still living with his parents. There is nothing further
to report.
5.
Griffith
Jones (1853-????) m. Susanna
i
William
Jones (1879-????) was born in Birmingham. That is as much as we know.
Fourth Generation
6.
Gertrude
May Jones (1888–1951) m. John Stanley White (1886-1950).
i
John
Derek White (1929-2006). He died in Ipswich, and was a third cousin of Hetty Jane Owen’s children.
This Blog is for the most part the story of the family history of our own branch of the Eldridge family. The investigation of the ancestors of Hetty Jane Owen, the wife of Charles Albert Eldridge is now complete, and the tale has resumed with an examination of the line of Charles Albert Eldridge.
