Alfred John Robinson was born in Poplar in 1834, the fifth child of Charles John Robinson and Harriett Wombwell. He married Harriett Elizabeth Clarke in Stoke Newington in 1864, and they had eight children. Alfred was with his elder brother, Richard, and their father, on the West India docks on census day of 1861. Alfred was yet another Robinson with a mechanical frame of mind, but attuned also to the seafaring tradition of his ancestors. By 1881, he was living in West Ham and had become a professional nautical instrument maker. In the 1891 census, this is elaborated on a little. He is recorded there as an optical fitter and gauge maker. The 1901 census meanwhile states that he is an engineer’s fitter, as does the 1911 census, when he was now a widower, still living in West Ham.
Battle of the Lys. Alfred John Robinson’s grandson, Albert Frank Meader died in this battle on the 27th April, 1918. He was a second cousin of Hetty Jane Owen. From: http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/lys-1918.html
